Putting hotel guests in jail? - Alkmaar (NL)

Now..., what civilized city would put its innocent tourists and guest in jail? Is that Dutch hospitality you might ask?
Well, actually: this building, called "Schutterswei" was opened in 1884 (some 140 years ago), and offered institution for 122 inmates. At first it was called "De Hout, but after WOII in 1949, the name had been changed.

So how come this building houses guests as in a hotel now? Because in 2021 it was turned into one! Yes, it has been updated and upgraded, now offering airconditioning, croissants for breakfast, 23 m2 (about 247,57 ft²) accomodations and your celldoor is original, but also opens from the inside now...
It's up to you if you can handle the experience, because I can guarantee you 'this is a special one'! Alkmaar is a great and lovely city to visit by the way. Be sure to visit the cheese market(!), usually on a Friday.
And likely you are able to choose your cellmates in this configuration. :D

I guess a lot of prisoners would have enjoyed to stay in this place, seeing the way it is now, compared to its original 'decoration' and style.

History on this building (in Dutch, sorry!):
